Lighthouse is Brimming with College-bound kids!

December 30, 2014

2064046915Congratulations to Jose De la O, who was recently accepted to Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. Curry College offers “a rich-blend of liberal arts and career-directed programs” that will allow Jose to receive a broad-based, personalized education while pursuing a degree in nursing. Before making his final college decision, Jose is waiting to hear back from several CSUs and UCs along with the University of Massachusetts and the University of San Francisco.

3107469767Kudos to Karen Ortega who was admitted to Cal State East Bay. Karen came to Lighthouse in 9th grade, and although she has experienced her share of struggles here, such as having to repeat 11th grade, she has shown tremendous growth and persistence getting to where she is today. As an aspiring artist, Karen is also applying to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in San Francisco and the Savannah College of Art and Design in addition to several other CSUs and UCs.

A round of applause for Kellsy Nava-Lopez, one of Lighthouse’s founding kindergartners, who was accepted to Whittier College in LA and Willamette University in Oregon. After spending half of her junior year in high school at Milton Academy’s Mountain School in Vermont, Kellsy is hoping to study environmental science in college. As of right now, her top college choices are Willamette, Lewis and Clark (also in Oregon), and Bates College in Maine.

A big shout out to Devonte Morris, who was accepted to Cal State Bakersfield. Devonte is one of the captains of Lighthouse’s basketball team, an active member of our school’s Black Student Union, and is interested in studying either sociology or psychology. Devonte also applied to several other CSUs and is planning to submit applications to a handful of Historically Black Colleges later this winter.

Finally, three cheers for Norma Anaya, another one of our founding kindergartners, who gained admission to Chico State University. Norma is hoping to study film in college, an interest she discovered by participating in a summer filmmaking program for girls called Camp Reel Stories. Norma has also applied to a handful of other CSUs and UCs, and is still contemplating whether or not to apply to any private colleges.

Visit Lighthouse in May for College Declaration Day to learn where all Class of 2015 will attend college!
