Jumoke Hinton has dedicated herself as a community builder in the Bay Area, for more than thirty years. For Jumoke, this has meant, helping lead the creation of community enterprises, building successful coalitions across multiple sectors and serving in leadership positions while investing in the success of local students and their families.
Jumoke was first elected to the Oakland Unified School District Board of Education in 2008 and ended service of her third term in 2020. During her time on the Board, she is most proud of her work in the areas of Restorative Justice and Race Equity policies. Jumoke holds a BA in Black Studies and English from Oberlin College. She’s had the honor of mothering and raising four children in West Oakland. Jumoke is Co-Founder of the State of Black Education in Oakland (SoBEO) collective that is dedicated to community, research and action that uplifts the narratives and practices of Black folks in education in Oakland.
