What is a charter school?

Charter schools are independent public schools with rigorous curriculum programs and unique educational approaches. In exchange for operational freedom and flexibility, charter schools are subject to higher levels of accountability than traditional public schools.

LCPS schools are tuition-free and open to all students (including students with disabilities, foster youth, unsheltered youth, and socioeconomically disadvantaged students and families), offer families quality and choice in the public education system.

What are the main differences between charter schools and public schools?

Charter schools are not operated by the local school district and have their own governing board. Charter schools can define their curriculum independent of the local school board, have different school calendars, and can spend funds in more flexible ways. Charter schools are required to meet all of the same health, safety, and transparency requirements as district schools.

How much does it cost to attend a charter school?

It is free to attend a LCPS school.

How does LCPS receive funding?

Lighthouse Community Public Schools receive public funding to educate the children attending the school. Lighthouse receives a fixed amount per pupil and finances operating costs with these funds. LCPS also raises money from individuals and foundations to supplement operating costs.

Who may apply to LCPS?

All students entering Kindergarten through the 12th grade may apply to Lighthouse.

Lodestar students are currently in  K–12 and will begin to accept applications for enrollment beginning in November 2022.

What is the general application process and timing?

We begin accepting applications for the 23-24 school year in November 2022. Please see the Enrollment page for a specific timeline. If more students apply than there are spaces available, a random, public lottery will be used to select applicants.

There are no application tests or other barriers to admission to LCPS. Please note that LCPS offers priority to unsheltered students and families and to students who live in our East Oakland neighborhoods.
