Teacher Residency Program Overview:
- The LCPS at Alder teacher residency program launched its first cohort of teacher residents in the Fall of 2019 through a partnership with Envision Education and Alder Graduate School of Education.
- Residents receive a Master’s Degree with a concentration in Teaching or Special Education and Teaching Credential both awarded by Alder GSE

Locations & Available Credentials:
Residents apprentice at one of our K-12 schools in Oakland: Lighthouse or Lodestar. Visit LCPS’ Locations to learn more about our schools. Available credentials include:
- Multiple Subject (K-8): To teach in an elementary self-contained, interdisciplinary expedition, or multiple subject middle school setting.
- Single Subject (6-12): To teach English, Math, Science or Social Studies in either Lodestar elementary school learning lab, middle or high school settings.
- Special Education: Mild/Moderate
- High Priority and additional stipends will be given to candidates seeking credentials in hard to staff areas.
- Currently these include: Single Subject Math, Single Subject Science, and Special Education.
Financial Overview:
- Residents receive a $35,000 living stipend, an additional $12,500 living stipend for healthcare, housing, and testing, plus close to $36,000 in grants and scholarships available.
- Tuition for Alder GSE was $22,610 for the 24-25 cohort. Please visit here for more information on financial aid including scholarship and loan opportunities. Final tuition for the 2025-26 cohort will be set by December 2024.
- Scholarships Available: Candidates in Math, Science, or Special Education will receive a one-time scholarship payment of $2500, and candidates who are Pell or Cal Grant recipients will receive a one-time scholarship payment of $1000. Payment will be distributed by Alder and spread out over the course of the four terms.
